In the book I Ching, Ch‘ien, which literally means Heaven and the south (Yang), is the first permutation in the Pa Kua*. Its symbol ( 三 ) has been applied to depict this set of three paintings, which respectively renders the Yang of Nine “Tzu”, the Yang of Three “Pi”, and the Yang of the late autumn from up to down. The Yang of Nine ”Tzu“ implies restlessness and aggressiveness, which can be explained by its irregular strokes in a turmoil with the colors of gold and pink, symbolically relevant to alchemy. The Yang of Three “Pi” implies stillness and coldness, which is stated by its freezing silver color surrounded by endless darkness. And the Yang of the late autumn describes a fading season, though with a tint of sadness, still cherishes its golden harvest and vernal expectations.
