Yin and Yang
In the book I Ching*, the symbol " — " means Yang, and "——” means Yin. Yang comes to be associated with light, day, maleness, and the south; while Yin is aligned with dark, night, femaleness, and the north. The twin concepts of Yin and Yang are fundamental to Chinese philosophy, in which they are seen not in opposition to each other, but rather as complementary-each needs the other to exist.
These two paintings represent the constantly changing interactions of Yin and Yang that give rise to the infinite variety of the patterns of life. The juxtaposition of up and down, together with a mainly somber tonality, has offered a symbolic explanation to the chaos of the world through a sophisticated application of Chinese ink brush strokes in the style of abstract expressionism.
